At the height of the pandemic and lockdown in 2020, almost half of the population reported high anxiety levels. A study conducted by the Human Sciences Research Council (2020) reported that 33% of South Africans were depressed and 29% said they experienced loneliness during the first lockdown period.
Even our founders, George and Dom experienced a lot of pressures on and off pitch during their professional sporting careers and they found that a lot of the prescribed medications they were offered could actually make anxious feelings worse. When speaking about CBD and anxiety, we first need to cover what anxiety actually is. Anxiety is describing a feeling of fear and can vary from slight unease to full on panic attacks. In ‘normal’ cases, these feelings are temporary and don’t impact you to day-to-day. However once anxiety turns into an anxiety disorder, this feeling of fear may stick with you all the time and have an increasingly negative impact on your life. Alongside our Central Nervous and Digestive systems, our body has another lesser known system, The ECS or Endocannabinoid System. CBD is thought to interact with various receptors in the brain, including neurotransmitters in the Central Nervous System which are associated with natural calming and anti-anxiety effects. So early anecdotal studies find there may be a link between CBD and Anxiety, but there is still a long way to g to determine exactly how the link behaves.
